25-year old righty starting pitcher Tim Lincecum won his second consecutive Cy Young Award in a very close vote over Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals. Lincecum deserved the award as he started 32 games for the Giants in which he was 15-7 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. He only allowed 168 hits in 225 1/3 innings last season while whiffing 261 batters showing just how dominating he was. Lincecum has now pitched in 90 games (89 starts) in his major league career and he is 40-17 with a 2.90 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. There is no reason to think that Lincecum can add more Cy Young Awards to his trophy case in the near future.

UPDATE: Tim Lincecum has also finished tied for 18th in the MVP Award voting in the N.L. He was tied with Shane Victorino of the Phillies.

Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants finished fifth in the balloting for the Manager of the Year Award in the National League. Bochy led the Giants to a 88-74 (54.3%) record last season despite the fact that they didn’t have much offense to work with. Bochy has now been the skipper of the Giants for three years now and he has compiled a 231-255 (47.5%) record during the regular season. With the Giants likely to spend a lot of money this winter look for Bochy to have them right in the hunt for the National League West.

The San Francisco Giants could look to Detroit for firepower

The Detroit Tigers might be looking to move left fielder Marcus Thames. If they are then the Giants should be interested in making an offer for him. Emmanuel Burriss and Merkin Valdez would likely be enough to get the job done for Thames. Thames has huge power but he has always been platooned. He could probably hit 30-40 homers with full time at bats and that’s what he would likely get with the Giants. The great thing about getting a player like Thames is that the Giants would also have more than enough money left in the budget to find a big bat for RF and 1B.
