The San Francisco Giants sign Aubrey Huff

The Giants have signed 33-year old lefty swinging 1B/3B/OF Aubrey Huff to a 1-year, $3 million dollar deal. I like this move if the Giants intend to use him in RF. But, if they are going to use him at 1B then they are screwing Juan Uribe and they will still need a RF who can hit. Huff played in 150 games for the Tigers and Orioles last season and he was 129 for 536 (.241 avg, .694 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 15 homers and 85 RBIs. Huff has now played in 1,322 games in his major league career and he is 1,391 of 4,936 (.282 avg, .812 OPS) with 654 runs scored, 203 homers, 752 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. This was a good deal for the Giants as Huff is still a good offensive player.

The San Francisco Giants appear one hitter short for the 2010 season

I think the Giants are one hitter away from sporting a good enough line-up to win the National League West. They could really use a thumper to play RF. If the season started next week the line-up would look something like this:

C-Buster Posey
1B-Pablo Sandoval
2B-Freddy Sanchez
SS-Edgar Renteria
3B-Juan Uribe
LF-Mark DeRosa
CF-Aaron Rowand
RF-Eugenio Velez/Nate Schierholtz

The Giants seem to lack some power going into the 2010 season. With that in mind I really like the idea of them bringing in Jermaine Dye to play RF. He might not be the best defender around but the man can still produce in the middle of a batting order. If they want to go the cheap route either Jonny Gomes or Marcus Thames would make some sense. Regardless, they are one hitter short of being a great baseball team so they need to get one before the 2010 season starts.

Brian Bocock gets designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants

The Giants have designated 24-year old shortstop Brian Bocock for assignment. Bocock played in 122 games in A+AA ball last season and he was 104 for 456 (.230 avg, .618 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 3 homers, 51 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. He has also played in 32 games in his career with the Giants in which he was 11 for 77 (.143 avg, .414 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Bocock also whiffed a stunning 29 times in his time with the Giants. The Giants needed Bocock’s roster spot for Juan Uribe. Bocock will not be missed as he can’t even hit in the minors.

UPDATE: I am stunned as the Blue Jays have claimed Bocock off waivers.
