The San Francisco Giants DFA Emmanuel Burriss

The San Francisco Giants have designated 27-year old switch-hitting infielder Emmanuel Burriss for assignment to make room on the roster for Marco Scutaro. Burriss played in 52 games for the Giants this year and he was 28 of 131 (.214 avg, .494 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 0 homers, 6 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. He played in 274 games in his five years with the Giants and he was 174 of 715 (.243 avg, .574 OPS) with 87 runs scored, 1 homer, 41 RBIs and 40 stolen bases. It will be interesting to see if Burriss clears waivers.

UPDATE: (8/2/2012) - Emmanuel Burriss has cleared waivers and he has accepted an outright assignment to AAA.

The San Francisco Giants place Pablo Sandoval on the D.L.

The Giants have placed 26-year old switch-hitting 3B Pablo Sandoval on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 25th due to a strained left hamstring. Sandoval has played in 62 games for the Giants so far this year and he is 70 for 234 (.299 avg, .843 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 8 homers and 33 RBIs. It appears as if Marco Scutaro will take Sandoval’s place at 3B until he’s ready to return to action.

The San Francisco Giants acquire Marco Scutaro from the Rockies

The San Francisco Giants have acquired 36-year old righty swinging 2B/SS Marco Scutaro from the Colorado Rockies for 23-year old righty swinging 2B Charlie Culberson. Scutaro played in 94 games for the Rockies this year and he was 101 of 373 (.271 avg, .684 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 4 homers, 30 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. He has now played in 1,197 games in his first 11 years in the majors and he is 1,120 of 4,141 (.270 avg, .723 OPS) with 585 runs scored, 72 homers, 434 RBIs and 51 stolen bases. Scutaro’s bat and versatility are going to be a big asset for the Giants down the stretch. Charlie Culberson came into this season as the Giants’ #11 prospect according to Baseball America. He played in 6 games for the Giants earlier this year and he was 3 for 22 (.136 avg, .273 OPS) with 1 RBI. This was a really good deal for the Giants.
