The Giants have placed 33-year old lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 15th due to a strained right oblique.  Affeldt has pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Giants so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 5.79 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP.  He will be replaced in the pen by 31-year old righty reliever Jean Machi.  Machi pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Giants so far this year and he is 1-0 with 1 save, a 0.00 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  He got his first taste of the majors for the Giants last year, working in 8 games (0 starts) in which he was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.

The Giants have placed 25-year old lefty starting pitcher Eric Surkamp on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22nd due to a strained left elbow tendon.  Surkamp comes into this season as the Giants’ #25 prospect according to Baseball America.  Surkamp missed all of last season due to Tommy John surgery.  He pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Giants in 2011 in his first taste of the majors and he was 2-2 with a 5.74 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP.  He has pitched in 71 games (67 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 26-13 with a 2.85 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.  The Giants hope that Surkamp will be ready to return in the second half of the 2013 season.

The Giants have placed 28-year old righty swinging 1B Brett Pill on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22nd due to right knee surgery.  Pill played in 48 games for the Giants last year and he was 22 for 105 (.210 avg, .618 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 4 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Pill has now played in 48 games in his first two years with the Giants and he is 37 for 155 (.239 avg, .702 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 6 homers, 20 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

The San Francisco Giants have placed 32-year old righty reliever Shane Loux on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained neck. Loux has pitched in 14 games (0 starts) for the Giants so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 5.66 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. He has given up 27 hits (3 homers) while walking only 6 batters and whiffing 9 in 20 2/3 innings so far this year. This isn’t much of a loss for the Giants as Loux doesn’t miss many bats.

The Giants have placed 35-year old lefty swinging 1B/OF Aubrey Huff on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right knee. Huff has played in 34 games so far this year and he is 9 for 61 (.148 avg, .530 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer and 6 RBIs. The Giants have called up 27-year old righty swinging 1B Brett Pill. Pill played in 36 games earlier this year for the Giants and he was 17 of 79 (.215 avg, .638 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 3 homers, 9 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

The Giants have placed 26-year old switch-hitting 3B Pablo Sandoval on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 25th due to a strained left hamstring. Sandoval has played in 62 games for the Giants so far this year and he is 70 for 234 (.299 avg, .843 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 8 homers and 33 RBIs. It appears as if Marco Scutaro will take Sandoval’s place at 3B until he’s ready to return to action.

25-year old lefty starting pitcher Eric Surkamp is going to have Tommy John Surgery in the very near future, so he will miss the rest of the 2012 season and likely 2/3 of the 2013 season….if all goes well. Surkamp didn’t pitch at all this year in the minors or majors for the Giants. He pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Giants last year and he was 2-2 with a 5.74 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP. He has also pitched in 71 games (64 starts) in his first four years in the minors for the Giants and he is 26-13 with a 2.85 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.

The San Francisco Giants have placed 22-year old switch-hitting catcher Hector Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained left knee. Sanchez has played in 39 games for the Giants so far this year and he is 36 for 128 (.281 avg, .669 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 2 homers and 24 RBIs. The Giants have called up 32-year old righty swinging catcher Eli Whiteside to replace Sanchez on the roster. Whiteside has played in 47 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 39 for 162 (.241 avg, .647 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 1 homer and 15 RBIs. Whiteside has played in 187 games in his first three years with the Giants and he is 101 of 466 (.217 avg, .616 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 10 homers, 40 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. The Giants hope that Sanchez only misses a couple of weeks as he is a lot better hitter than Whiteside is.

The San Francisco Giants have lost 34-year old righty swinging 2B Freddy Sanchez for the whole 2012 season due to back surgery. He has played in 196 games in his four years with the Giants and he is 224 of 772 (.290 avg, .720 OPS) with 87 runs scored, 11 homers, 78 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. The Giants signed Sanchez to a 1-year, $6 million dollar deal last winter. They need to let Sanchez go over the winter as he was never the player for them that they thought he would be.

The Giants have called up 34-year old righty Brad Penny to replace Loux in the bullpen and work as the long man. Penny pitched in 7 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Giants this year and he was 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. He has pitched in 319 games (315 starts) in his first 12 years in the majors and he is 119-99 with a 4.23 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. The Giants hope Penny will work out for them.
